Shinrin-yoku: Take a Forest Bath

I’m a huge fan of the Trust for Public Land. Back in the Fall/Winter 2013 edition of Land & People, I took in Katherine Ozment’s “Last Family in the Woods,” the title of which is a play on Richard Louv’s “Last Child in the Woods.”

In the piece, Ozment runs through “a growing body of evidence” that makes clear “exposure to nature is an essential component of human health and well-being” (p 34 here).

One of the concepts shared was that of shinrin-yoku, Japanese for “forest bath.” Continue reading

Facebook Ad Targeting by Hashtag: Context Matters

I expect you’ve seen ad targeting by hashtag. If you’ve not got your own example top of mind, you will if you start looking. Leave a comment below or tweet me up if you have.

My recent example started with a short afternoon walk outside my office. Yesterday, I saw an odd scene in a nearby park, so I shot and shared it.

sweatpants, tree, Colorado Springs, Instagram, ethanbeute

The image went up on Instagram with this description:

Start to Finish: A Colorado Landscape Painting by Tracy Felix

Four years ago, I discovered the work of Tracy Felix, a Colorado-based artist who’s lived in the San Luis Valley, Colorado Springs, and Manitou Springs and now resides in Denver.

Here’s the blog post about a Pikes Peak painting at the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum: click here.

We connected directly when I reached out to share that blog post with him. Here’s a quick follow up: click here.

I also ran into his work at the Denver Art Museum: click here.

I was incredibly pleased to learn that one of my photos of The Three Apostles from this Huron Peak summit hike photo set inspired a painting of his.

Leadership Quotes from Legendary Basketball Coach John Wooden

Legendary basketball coach John Wooden worked with Steve Jamison on “Wooden on Leadership,” a well received book outlining his perspective and philosophy on life and leadership.

I enjoyed the book very much. I’ve included below several solid quotes from Wooden, his father, and men who coached or played basketball under his leadership. Not to be missed is the fact that these leadership quotes are also quotes about being a decent human being.

One of the best things about the book is explained in this video.

Neuroeconomist Paul Zak on Morality in Market Economies

Neuroeconomist Paul Zak studies, writes, and speaks about the role oxytocin plays in trust. Trust, of course, is fundamental to productive societies and economies.

Below, find a 2009 episode of On Being with Krista Tippett featuring Zak, followed by a transcription of one of its many interesting passages.  The episode is especially interesting because the conversation took place during the market collapse often called The Great Recession.  The passage was chosen for its closing lines’ use of Aristotle’s virtue of magnificence and angle on prosperity and its “refudiation” of the idea that financial transactions and economic pursuits are unbecoming and base.
